How to calculate a time percentage — step by step (with a worked example)

A time percentage tells you what share a partial duration is of a total duration. The formula is part ÷ total · 100, where both durations must be in the same unit. Worked example: 90 minutes of 480 minutes = 18.75%. Suitable for Grade 7 / Year 8 percentages.

Quick answer

To find a time percentage, divide the part duration by the total duration and multiply by 100: part ÷ total · 100. Both durations must be in the same unit. Example: 90 minutes of an 8-hour day (480 minutes) is 90 ÷ 480 · 100 = 18.75%.

The steps to calculate a time percentage

These steps work for any time share, as long as both durations are in the same unit.

  1. Step 1 · Start

    90 of 480 = ?%
What share is 90 minutes of 480 minutes?
  2. Step 2 · Formula

    90 ÷ 480 · 100
    Part over total, times 100.
  3. Step 3 · Divide

    0.1875 · 100
Divide first, then multiply by 100.
  4. Step 4 · Result

    = 18.75%
90 minutes is 18.75% of the total duration.

Why the formula works

A percentage is just a fraction with a denominator of 100. Part ÷ total gives the ratio as a decimal (0.1875); multiplying by 100 rescales that ratio onto a scale of one hundred. The key is that the numerator and denominator share the same unit — otherwise you are comparing minutes with hours and the fraction is meaningless. That is why converting to a common unit is the most important step.
