How to convert a decimal to a percent — step by step

A decimal and a percentage describe the same share, just written differently. To convert, multiply the decimal by 100 — this moves the point two places to the right. Worked example: 0.19 · 100 = 19%. A core percentage skill from Grade 6–7 onward.

Quick answer

To convert a decimal to a percent, multiply it by 100 — this moves the point two places to the right. Example: 0.19 · 100 = 19%. To go back, divide the percentage by 100.

Why multiplying by 100 works

Percent literally means "per hundred": 1% is one hundredth, that is 0.01. The number 1 represents the whole, that is 100%. To express a decimal in these hundredth units, you multiply by 100. Because 100 has two zeros, every digit shifts exactly two places to the right.
